Low immunity and fatigue go hand in hand. When our immunity is compromised we are inevitably tired. It is all a matter of degree. Sometimes we may succumb to a virus or infection as in:
- Recurrent infections – cold-sores, herpes, shingles
- Colds and flu
- Sore throats
- Glandular fever
Other times our immune system is responding to a trigger which the immune cells have learnt to regard as an “enemy” and so they mount a response, as in:
- Sinusitis and hayfever
- Eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, rashes
These all take a big toll on our vitality and there are many herbal remedies and nutritional supplements that address these conditions and relieve symptoms.
We mostly succumb to these conditions when we are more stressed and run-down. So, when immunity is compromised, it is also important to support adrenal function. Because we are stressed our adrenal glands work extra hard pumping out adrenalin and cortisol for the “fight and flight” required.
With long-term stress our cortisol levels may remain elevated which makes our immune system hyper-vigilant. This means that our immune cells may begin attacking our own tissue, which is how we develop auto-immune conditions.
With prolonged stress we may become adrenally exhausted, susceptible to depression, chronic illness, post-viral syndromes and chronic fatigue.
Treat the Cause as well as the Symptoms
When immunity is compromised it is important to not just treat the symptoms but also the cause. There are many effective herbal tonics that boost and balance adrenal function, help recharge our batteries and improve our immunity.
It is also important to treat the gut. Firstly because it is important to have a more protective barrier against the entry of pathogens or compounds the immune system has learned not to tolerate. And secondly, because it is along our gastro-intestinal wall that we synthesise many of our calming neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine.
If there is a chronically inflamed gut wall we cannot produce enough of these soothing neurotransmitters to offset our upregulated output of adrenalin and cortisol. So we struggle to get out of “fight and flight”. We remain “wired and tired”. We can’t switch off, sleep poorly, never wake feeling refreshed.
Sleep is essential for healing. It is during sleep that our body does all its restoring, resetting and repairing. If we are not sleeping well we are not giving our body time to restore and repair.
